The Ecole des Maîtres is an advanced theatre workshop for young actors. Created by Franco Quadri in 1990, and now in its 23rd year, it won the 2007 Venice Biennale Golden Lion award.
The partnership between the European countries participating in the Ecole project is to be extended this year to include Croatia, which will join the four initial founding partner countries - Belgium, France, Italy, and Portugal. The Ecole des Maîtres training course provides a unique opportunity for actors to work alongside and learn from some of the most renowned directors on the international scene. It is open to young actors who have completed their training in European theatre schools and academies of dramatic art and who are already professionally active. The aim of the programme, which is purposely designed to encourage the comparison and exchange of expertise regarding the methods and practices of theatrical production, is to foster a relationship between the participating actors through shared work experience and exposure to different texts and different spoken and artistic languages during the course of a series of itinerant workshops.
Leading the Ecole des Maîtres this year will be two master writer-directors who form the now internationally renowned artistic partnership ricci/forte. Entitled JG matricule 192102, their workshop takes its central inspiration from the poetic world of Jean Genet and improvisation, thus enhancing opportunities to explore forms of performance that are physical, emotional and visionary.
The workshop will run from 26 August to 1 October 2014, with the first stage (26 August to 7 September) being held in Udine, Italy, and the second (9 to 18 September) in Coimbra, Portugal.
The outcome of the workshops will be presented to the public during an open lesson in Udine on 7 September and in five final public performances in the participating countries, scheduled as follows: 18 September in Coimbra, 22 September in Zagreb, 25 September in Rome, 28 September in Brussels, and 1 October in Reims.
Twenty actors will be selected to participate in this 23rd edition of Ecole des Maîtres, with a total of four actors / actresses from each partner country.
The workshop will be held in English without the mediation of interpreters and therefore participants are required to have a high level of competence in the English language.
