Dialogues is an original performing arts project conceived and curated by CSS Teatro Stabile di innovazione del Friuli Venezia Giulia and Azienda Speciale Villa Manin.
Jointly funded by contributions from MiBACT, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Cultural Activities and Tourism, and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Authority, the project follows an agreement which concerns support initiatives for projects aimed at establishing, promoting and developing artist residencies, and foresees the establishment of performing arts residencies at Villa Manin, the region’s main arts exhibition venue.
This, the first project of its kind to be supported by the Regional Authority of Friuli Venezia Giulia, will be developed over a three-year period and aims to encourage the creative development of the performing arts through a programme of artist residences that will foster closer collaboration at national, European and international level. In launching this initiative, CSS intends to create a programme defined for and within the local region which will, at the same time, involve Italian and international performance artists and groups.
Indeed, this cross-cultural exchange lies at the very heart of the project, which is open to both emerging and established Italian and international performance artists and groups. During their residence at Villa Manin, which will provide guesthouse facilities for visiting artists as well as rehersal rooms and creative work areas, participants will be invited to explore the theme ‘Dialogue: cultural exchange in the Mediterranean area’.
The initiative will begin with four residencies running from November 2015 through to February 2016, with many more to follow. For the duration of their residence, Italian and international artists and groups will be invited to ‘inhabit’ the spaces of the Passariano villa and use them to bring the fruits of their artistic explorations and creations to life.
During the course of the project’s ongoing development, Villa Manin will play a central role, transforming itself into an experimental laboratory, a place to explore a variety of different forms of creative dialogue between the artist, the local region, and its communities. The project’s open and collaborative format will see the involvement of both artists and ordinary citizens in the creative process and, at the level of artistic expression, will be guided by a truly multidisciplinary approach, thus encouraging a perpetual dialogue between different performance art forms and, at the same time, setting in motion creative processes that will create an interplay between the location, the history, the architecture and the heritage of the Villa.
Dialogues - Performing Arts Residencies will provide a meeting place bringing together artists from a rich mix of nationalities, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences; it will be the locus for meetings, panels, artists workshops and encounters with critics and the public on matters relating to the performing arts, and will, during the course of its development, become integrated within a growing network of Italian and European arts residencies.
The project, in its conceptualization, has many important anchor points, beginning with the theme of artist responsibility and the vital relationship between artists and the society in which we are immersed.
The residences are designed to generate real, albeit temporary, artistic communities, those which operate not in isolation but, on the contrary, in synergy with the local territory and those who live and work there, the aim being to build a strong and solid relationship between art and the local environment. Residences thus conceived can develop trajectories of thought and creativity that tap into and create an interplay between diverse physical, cultural, and social perspectives, in the process creating a strong sense of community.
Participating artists will be given carte blanche as regards the nature and format of their contribution during their residency; they might choose to initiate a new creative project, continue an ongoing creative work, use the residency to test and explore ideas, or as an opportunity to meet with artists from different backgrounds and career paths, with a view to comparing and exchanging ideas and experiences. Either at the end or during the residences themselves, there will be opportunities for the public to attend creative workshops as well as meetings and workshops with experts, critics, artists and other personalities.
